Engineering Integrity Society

Freelance Journal Editor & Designer The Engineering Integrity Society (EIS) is looking for a freelance Journal Editor & Designer to help produce its technical journal, which is published twice a year in March and September. This is a small, flexible freelance role, with the majority of the work taking place during two production periods each year: approximately January–March and July–September. The role would suit someone with good Adobe InDesign skills, an eye for design and attention to detail, who enjoys producing a professional publication and is looking for a manageable freelance commitment.   About the role The EIS provides the content and copy for each issue. Your role will be to take this material and turn it into a professionally designed, print-ready journal, working within the established EIS style. You will work with the EIS Marketing & Events Manager and Editor and will be responsible for managing the practical production of each issue through to printing. Main responsibilities

  • Taking supplied copy, articles, images and other material and laying out each issue using Adobe InDesign.
  • Designing pages to create a clear, consistent and professional-looking publication.
  • Preparing and positioning photographs, graphics and advertisements.
  • Making minor amendments to copy and correcting obvious errors where appropriate.
  • Checking page layouts carefully for consistency, accuracy and presentation.
  • Preparing the completed journal for professional printing.
  • Liaising with the printer and managing the production process through to completion.
  • Checking proofs and making any necessary corrections before the journal goes to print.
  • Liaising with the EIS Marketing & Events Manager regarding content, artwork, deadlines and any issues arising during production.
  • Managing advertising artwork and ensuring adverts are correctly positioned and supplied in the required format.
  • Keeping track of the production schedule and ensuring the finished journal is delivered to the printer on time. The EIS will provide the main editorial content, articles and other copy required for each issue, so this is primarily a publication design and production role.

Skills and experience We are looking for someone who:

  • Has good practical experience using Adobe InDesign, particularly for multi-page publications.
  • Has a good eye for layout, typography and presentation.
  • Is confident preparing artwork for professional printing.
  • Has excellent attention to detail and enjoys checking work carefully.
  • Is organised and able to work to agreed deadlines.
  • Is comfortable working independently and managing the production process once the content has been supplied.
  • Has good written English and can spot obvious errors in copy.
  • Has a reliable and methodical approach. Previous experience producing a magazine, journal, newsletter, brochure or similar publication would be useful. Experience of technical or engineering publications would be an advantage but is not essential. Good working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop would also be useful. Technical requirements The successful candidate will need:
  • Their own current Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, including Adobe InDesign.
  • Their own suitable computer and reliable internet connection.
  • Microsoft Word or equivalent software. The commitment The journal is published twice a year, with the main work taking place during approximately January–March and July–September (around 80-90 hours per issue). The role is freelance and flexible, with work concentrated around the production of each issue. It is intended as a small, ongoing freelance commitment rather than a full-time or substantial editorial role. Remote working is offered. Applicants should be able to provide examples of relevant publications they have designed or produced and briefly outline their experience with Adobe InDesign and print production
