Ready to take the next step in your waste management career while working a full-time, four-day week? This Lead Waste Engineer opportunity at Winfrith offers Monday to Thursday working, with Friday working available if preferred, alongside the chance to shape radioactive waste strategy across major decommissioning activities. Whether you're already operating in a senior waste management position or looking to take the next step in your career following the successful completion of a nuclear graduate programme where we could consider this a developmental opportunity, this role offers the opportunity to broaden your influence, develop leadership experience and play a key role in shaping radioactive waste management strategy at site level. Your expertise will directly contribute to the safe progression of decommissioning activities and the continued development of waste management capability at Winfrith. What You Will Be Doing You'll provide expert guidance on radioactive waste management matters across a diverse range of projects and operational activities. Working across multiple teams, you'll help ensure waste requirements are considered early, risks are understood and practical solutions are developed that support safe and compliant delivery. You'll also play a key role in strengthening waste management capability across the site. Whether supporting future strategy, advising on regulatory matters or developing less experienced colleagues, you'll help drive high standards and continuous improvement within the function. All of this is delivered through a full-time role structured across four days each week, giving you an additional day to spend on the things that matter most to you.

  • Lead engagement with regulators on waste management matters.
  • Oversee radioactive and controlled waste transportation activities.
  • Develop technical training, coaching and mentoring initiatives.
  • Deputise for senior waste management leaders when required. Who Are We Looking For? Minimum National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 4 (HNC) or equivalent in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline. We're interested in hearing from experienced radioactive waste management professionals as well as ambitious nuclear waste specialists who have developed strong technical foundations and are ready for greater responsibility. If you have the technical capability, nuclear industry experience and the desire to grow, we'll support you in developing the broader leadership skills that come with this role. You'll be comfortable building relationships across a wide range of stakeholders, providing trusted technical advice and helping to influence positive outcomes. This role would suit someone who enjoys combining hands-on technical expertise with broader leadership responsibilities and wants to play an active role in shaping the future direction of waste management at site level.
  • Significant experience within nuclear waste management environments.
  • Experience supporting waste strategies and waste inventories.
  • Experience in High Activity Waste (HAW) would be advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of waste legislation and site licence requirements. Want to learn more about working at NRS?
