About Safer Futures

Safer Futures provides support to adults, young people, and children affected by domestic abuse across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Our vision is to help create safer communities and work towards ending domestic abuse in all its forms.

At Barnardo's, we deliver a range of programmes designed to support individuals on their recovery journey, as well as those who wish to address and change their abusive behaviour. We also provide specialist domestic abuse training for professionals and deliver educational programmes in primary and secondary schools across Cornwall. Through this work, we help children and young people recognise the signs of abuse, understand healthy relationships, and develop the knowledge and skills needed to build safe, respectful, and positive relationships throughout their lives.

About the Role

We are looking for a Behaviour Change Worker to join our Safer Futures Service, working within the Change 4 U Behaviour Change Programme.

The Change 4 U Behaviour Change Programme supports adult males and females who display abusive behaviours within their intimate relationships. Our aim is to support and protect those whose lives are adversely affected by domestic abuse.

Through a structured intervention programme, we work with individuals to challenge harmful beliefs and behaviours, take responsibility for their actions, and develop respectful, responsible, and healthy relationships with others and themselves.

The programme also provides support to partners and ex-partners, helping to enhance safety and improve outcomes for individuals, children, and families.

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled practitioner who can balance support, accountability, and risk management whilst maintaining a focus on the safety and wellbeing of those affected by domestic abuse.

Initial Specific Responsibilities

  • Identify and assess risks and needs, undertaking risk assessments and developing robust safety plans.
  • Provide one-to-one support to individuals who display abusive behaviours using a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach.
  • Assess clients' needs and develop agreed intervention plans that promote sustainable behaviour change.
  • Support individuals to recognise, understand, and take responsibility for the impact of their behaviour on others.
  • Work collaboratively with key agency partners to address the impact of abusive behaviour on victims and children.
  • Ensure safety planning is coordinated through relevant multi-agency processes, including MARAC and DA IOM Operational Groups.
  • Attend MARAC meetings and other multi-agency forums as required.
  • Develop and implement clear exit and transition plans for clients completing the programme.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records in line with organisational and safeguarding requirements.
  • Work as part of a supportive team and contribute positively to service development and multi-agency working.

About You

The successful candidate will be compassionate, resilient, and non-judgemental, with a strong understanding of domestic abuse and behaviour change. You will be an effective communicator, able to build trusting relationships while maintaining professional boundaries and holding individuals accountable for their behaviour.

Essential Experience

  • Experience of working with individuals affected by domestic abuse.
  • Experience of working in partnership with statutory, voluntary, and community sector organisations.
  • Experience of providing one-to-one support and intervention.
  • Experience of supporting clients with complex needs.
  • Experience of empowering individuals to make positive and sustainable changes in their lives.
  • Experience of risk assessment, risk management, and safety planning.
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary or multi-agency environment.
  • Excellent communication, engagement, and relationship-building skills.
