About the job

About Darter At Darter, we help organisations tackle complex challenges of national importance. Working across Defence, national security, government and technology, we combine strategic thinking with practical delivery to create lasting impact. We're driven by a simple belief: great outcomes come from combining excellence, empathy and integrity. We build trusted relationships, challenge constructively and focus on work that strengthens the UK's security, resilience and prosperity. Our culture is collaborative, supportive and curious, giving talented people the opportunity to grow, contribute and make a meaningful difference. Candidates must be based in or around Bristol or London and comfortable with regular travel to client sites across the UK. What you'll do -   Shape and structure client problems, helping to define scope, objectives, constraints and the key questions to explore. -   Get stuck into analysis across a range of inputs and sources, turning complexity into clear options and recommendations. -   Lead and contribute to stakeholder interviews, workshops and working sessions with senior military, civil service and industry figures. -   Produce high-quality deliverables, briefings and papers that stand up to senior scrutiny and support real decisions. -   Play an active role in planning and managing delivery, including actions, dependencies, risks and milestones. -   Work closely with colleagues to challenge thinking, refine advice, and maintain quality and coherence across outputs. What we're looking for Essential -   Around three or more years' experience in consulting, strategy or a similar advisory role. -   Comfortable with ambiguity, and able to turn complex or incomplete information into clear next steps. -   Clear written and verbal communication, including with senior stakeholders. -   Sound judgement and a disciplined approach to delivery. -   Able to obtain UK Security Clearance. Nice to have -   Experience in Defence, government or the wider public sector. -   Curiosity about digital, data, technology or AI. -   Experience with governance, operating models or organisational change. If you don't tick every box on the essential list but think you could grow into the rest, please apply anyway — see the note at the end. Our values -   Force for good. We work on problems that matter and consider the wider consequences of our advice. -   Deliver excellence. We take rigour and quality seriously and expect work to be done properly. -   Empathy and integrity. We act with respect and honesty in how we work with clients and with each other. A note for anyone unsure whether to apply We want Darter to reflect a broad range of backgrounds and experience, not just the traditional profile of a Defence consultant. If you're returning to work after a career break, moving in from a different sector, or simply not sure you tick every box above, we'd still like to hear from you. This description sets out the shape of the role, not a checklist to meet in full. Get in touch and start a conversation with us.
