Closing Date 12:00 Midday on Wednesday 7 October 2026 Looking for more than traditional costs work? The Government Legal Department is recruiting 1 Grade 6 Senior Costs Lawyer/Draftsperson and 3 Grade 7 Costs Lawyer/Draftspersons to join its specialist Costs Team. This is an opportunity to work on costs matters arising from some of the Government's most significant and high-profile litigation. The team deals with:
- Judicial Reviews
- Commercial Litigation
- Clinical Negligence
- Public Inquiries
- Employment
- Human Rights claims
- Land Tribunal matters
- Supreme Court litigation The work is frequently complex, high-value and often unique in nature. Team members regularly appear before the Senior Courts Costs Office and the Supreme Court. What's the difference between Grade 6 and Grade 7? Both grades involve managing complex adverse costs, recovery and budgeting matters whilst providing specialist costs advice across Government. The Grade 7 roles focus on managing significant costs caseloads and supporting the wider Costs Centre of Excellence. The Grade 6 role carries additional responsibility for:
- Strategic leadership
- Team management
- Developing junior costs professionals
- Leading on complex and high-profile matters
- Shaping service delivery and capability across the team Why do people join? What often attracts Costs Lawyers and Draftspersons to GLD is the opportunity to continue working on technically challenging costs matters whilst applying their expertise in a completely different environment. The team acts as a recognised Centre of Excellence and supports litigation across the whole of Government. As a result, the variety, profile and significance of the work can be difficult to find elsewhere. Interested? If you'd like to learn a little more, please feel free to get in touch for a completely confidential conversation. I'd be delighted to talk through the team, the work and what a day-to-day career within GLD really looks like. Alternatively, you can apply directly via Civil Service Jobs.
