Quantitative Trader - Systematic Energy Trading - UK Hybrid - £DOE + Equity Potential
EVERECQuantitative Trader – Systematic Energy Trading – UK Hybrid – £DOE + Equity Potential Location: UK – Hybrid, approximately 1 day per week in office Salary: DOE – talent-led package, with potential equity discussion Job Type: Permanent, Full Time The Opportunity EVEREC is partnering with a fast-growing energy trading business to recruit a Quantitative Trader to help build and lead its systematic trading capability across European energy markets. This is a greenfield opportunity for someone who wants significantly more ownership than they would typically have within an established trading house. You'll join an existing team of quantitative researchers and manual traders as the first dedicated Quant Trader, with the freedom to research, build, deploy and trade systematic strategies while helping shape the future direction of the quantitative trading function. We're looking for someone who has personally traded systematic strategies and owned trading risk/P&L – not solely researched models or developed tools for other traders. You'll need to be equally comfortable researching alpha, writing production-quality code and taking responsibility for the technical/backend components required to get your strategies into live trading. Key Responsibilities
- Research, develop, deploy and trade systematic strategies across energy and commodity markets.
- Identify new signals, market opportunities and sources of alpha.
- Take ownership of strategies from initial idea and research through backtesting, implementation and live trading.
- Assume responsibility for trading decisions, risk and strategy performance.
- Build the quantitative models, algorithms and technical infrastructure required to support your strategies.
- Develop robust research and backtesting frameworks using historical and real-time market data.
- Apply statistical and mathematical techniques to market behaviour, pricing dynamics and signal generation.
- Account for transaction costs, liquidity, slippage, overfitting and execution constraints when evaluating strategies.
- Monitor live strategies, P&L, risk, alpha decay and changing market regimes.
- Continuously improve strategy performance and identify new areas of opportunity.
- Work alongside existing quantitative researchers and manual traders to develop the wider systematic trading capability.
- Help shape the technical and strategic direction of the quantitative trading function as the business grows. About You We're looking for a hands-on Quantitative Trader who combines trading judgement, quantitative research and strong technical capability. This role is particularly suited to someone currently within a commodity or energy trading house who wants to move away from a highly structured environment and take significantly greater ownership over what they build and trade. You will ideally have:
- Professional experience as a Quantitative Trader, Systematic Trader or Algorithmic Trader.
- Direct experience personally trading systematic strategies and owning risk/P&L.
- Experience researching, backtesting and deploying your own quantitative trading strategies.
- Strong Python development skills and the ability to build production-quality trading tools yourself.
- The technical self-sufficiency to take responsibility for your own research, models and supporting backend rather than relying on dedicated engineering or DevOps teams.
- Strong mathematics, statistics, time-series analysis and quantitative modelling knowledge.
- Experience identifying, validating and implementing new sources of alpha.
- Understanding of execution, position sizing, portfolio construction and risk management.
- Experience monitoring and improving strategies once deployed into live trading.
- A strong academic background in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, Financial Engineering or a related quantitative discipline.
- Experience within energy or commodity trading is highly desirable, particularly power and gas.
- An entrepreneurial mindset and genuine interest in building a trading capability within a growing business. Relevant backgrounds could include commodity trading houses, energy trading businesses, proprietary trading firms, hedge funds or other systematic trading environments. What's On Offer
- A talent-led compensation package depending on experience.
- Potential for an equity-led conversation for the right individual.
- Hybrid working, currently expected to be approximately one day per week in the office, with flexibility depending on workload.
- Significant freedom over strategy research, technology and implementation.
- Opportunity to become the first dedicated Quant Trader within an existing quantitative research and manual trading team.
- Genuine ownership of strategies from research through to live trading.
- Opportunity to help build and shape the systematic trading capability rather than simply participate within an established structure.
- Direct exposure to European energy and commodity markets.
- Significant scope to influence the direction and growth of the wider trading business. If you're currently operating within systematic or quantitative trading and are looking for the opportunity to build, trade and take genuine ownership, rather than simply work within an established trading infrastructure, we'd like to hear from you.
