You will be responsible for developing high-quality electrical designs for projects ranging from commercial-scale installations of approximately 200 kW through to large utility-scale solar farms of up to 60 MW. Working across both the pre-construction and construction phases, you will contribute to system architecture, grid connections, detailed electrical design, procurement, commissioning and energisation. You will also work closely with internal teams, DNOs, contractors, suppliers and other project stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with all relevant technical and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities: As a Power Systems Design Engineer, you will:

  • Design HV and LV electrical systems for power generation projects, with a primary focus on utility-scale and commercial solar PV.
  • Develop, review and optimise system architectures and Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) from initial concept through to detailed design.
  • Manage and coordinate grid connection applications and technical submissions with the relevant Distribution Network Operator (DNO).
  • Ensure designs meet applicable Grid Code, G99, G100 and connection requirements.
  • Coordinate and review power system studies, including load flow, fault level, protection coordination and power quality assessments.
  • Develop technical specifications for primary electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, protection systems, inverters and metering equipment.
  • Support the development of protection philosophies and relay settings in accordance with grid and DNO requirements.
  • Review DNO connection offers and provide technical responses to DNO queries and requirements.
  • Provide technical support throughout procurement, FAT/SAT, installation, commissioning and energisation.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical risk assessments and value engineering initiatives.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant BS, IEC, ENA and project-specific standards and requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with project managers, construction teams, consultants, suppliers and other engineering disciplines to resolve technical issues and deliver robust project solutions. Experience & Qualifications: We are looking for an experienced electrical engineer with a strong background in power systems and renewable energy. You will ideally have:
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience designing HV and LV electrical systems within the power generation or renewable energy sector.
  • Experience working on solar PV projects, particularly commercial or utility-scale developments.
  • Demonstrable experience managing grid connection applications and working directly with DNOs.
  • A strong understanding of G99, G100, UK Grid Code and ENA requirements.
  • Experience producing and reviewing Single Line Diagrams, protection philosophies and system architectures.
  • Practical experience undertaking or reviewing power system studies, including load flow, fault level and protection coordination studies.
  • Experience using ETAP or similar power system modelling software.
  • A strong understanding of relevant UK electrical standards and industry requirements.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and manage multiple priorities in a project environment. If you are interested in this fantastic opportunity, please send your CV through to Rob Byrom.
