SSI Voluntary Treasurer
at Safe Sport InternationalCompany Description Safe Sport International (SSI) is the independent global body dedicated to preventing violence, abuse and harassment in sport. As a global expert community united in our drive for change, we stand against abuse in sport through independent, evidence-based action. Through our international conferences, consultancy and safeguarding guidance and resources, we strive to drive change in international standards and practice for safeguarding in sport. Safe Sport International is governed by an international Board of Trustees, supported by trustee committees including the Finance and Risk Committee. As SSI enters an important new phase strengthening its governance and operating model, increasing staffing, diversifying income and preparing to scale its reach and impact, the Board and CEO need dedicated senior financial leadership. We are seeking a Voluntary Treasurer to provide independent financial oversight, proportionate assurance and strategic financial leadership. The Treasurer will chair the Finance and Risk Committee, work closely with the Board and CEO, and provide constructive challenge without duplicating day-to-day financial management. Specific responsibilities will include:
- helping the Board interpret management accounts and monitor income, expenditure, cash flow and reserves;
- reviewing budgets, forecasts and financial assumptions to ensure they are realistic and aligned with SSI's strategy;
- advising on financial sustainability, income diversification, organisational growth and major funding decisions;
- overseeing the development and monitoring of SSI's risk register;
- advising on reserves, going concern, financial resilience and the implications of significant decisions;
- helping ensure proportionate financial controls, delegated authorities and relevant policies are in place;
- supporting compliance with charity and company law, financial reporting requirements and funder obligations; and
- planning and chairing quarterly Finance and Risk Committee meetings and presenting recommendations to the Board. The role requires approximately four to six hours per month, with additional input around budgeting, year-end reporting, audit or independent examination, major funding decisions and risk reviews. The Treasurer will initially attend quarterly Board meetings as an observer and, following a successful initial period, may be considered for appointment as a trustee, subject to SSI's recruitment, due diligence and approval processes. This is an opportunity to help shape the future of an independent global organisation at a pivotal stage of its development—and to ensure that SSI's ambition to make everyone, everywhere safe in sport is supported by sustainable plans, sound decisions and strong accountability. We are looking for a financially experienced, values-led person who can provide independent oversight and strategic financial leadership as Safe Sport International grows.
- The most important requirement is strong senior-level financial expertise. Ideally, you will be a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or equivalent), although we also welcome applicants with substantial leadership experience in finance, audit, investment, banking or financial governance.
- You should understand UK charity accounting and reporting, be confident interpreting budgets, management accounts, forecasts, cashflow and reserves, and be able to explain financial information clearly to people who are not finance specialists.
- You will bring experience of serving on, advising or working with boards, committees or governance bodies. You should understand collective responsibility, risk management, conflicts of interest and the distinction between strategic oversight and operational management. Experience of chairing or contributing to a finance, audit or risk committee would be particularly valuable.
- We are seeking someone with sound judgement, integrity and independence of thought. You will be comfortable asking constructive questions, testing assumptions and identifying risks, while working collaboratively with trustees, the CEO and professional advisers.
- A commitment to SSI's vision of everyone, everywhere safe in sport is essential. You do not need previous experience in safe sport: financial expertise, good governance judgement and a willingness to understand our mission and international context are more important.
- Experience in charity or non-profit finance, organisational growth, income diversification, international development, sport governance or safeguarding would be advantageous. Experience of working across countries or cultures would also be welcome.
