Job Title Chemical Engineer Intern (12 months) - Starting Summer 2027 Project Title: Tuning Zirfon Membrane Pore Size and Exploiting Donnan Exclusion for Enhanced Performance in Alkaline Water Electrolysis About SLB We are a global technology company, driving energy innovation for a balanced planet. At SLB we create amazing technology that unlocks access to energy for the benefit of all. That is our purpose. As innovators, that has been our mission for 100 years. We are facing the world's greatest balancing act- how to simultaneously reduce emissions and meet the world's growing energy demands. We're working on that answer. Every day, a step closer. Our collective future depends on decarbonizing the fossil fuel industry, while innovating a new energy landscape. It's what drives us. Ensuring progress for people and the planet, on the journey to net zero and beyond. For a balanced planet. Our purpose: Together, we create amazing technology that unlocks access to energy for the benefit of all. You can find out more about us on https://www.slb.com/who-we-are Location: Cambridge, UK SLB Cambridge Research (SCR) is part of SLB's global network of research and engineering centres. SCR is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art research and computing facilities. We work on applied research projects in the physical sciences to meet the current and future challenges of the industry. Description & Scope We have one internship vacancy within the ‘Electro-Chemical Technologies' group, in the area of membrane fabrication. This research project will be focused on development of Zirfon membranes, which are composed of a porous polysulfone matrix filled with zirconia particles. These membranes are widely used as separators in alkaline water electrolysis due to their excellent chemical stability and low electrical resistance. Precise control of membrane pore size and surface charge can effectively suppress the crossover of dissolved species and gas bubbles between the anode and cathode compartments, thereby improving electrolysers efficiency and product purity. Structural and electrochemical characterization techniques will be employed to investigate the morphology, transport properties, and electrochemical performance of Zirfon membranes. The work will primarily be experimental and lab-based, carrying out experiments as well as performing characterization, analysis and interpretation of the experimental data. You will work within a team of scientists as an integrated part of the team working on an on-going research projects. The position would be suitable for those interested in applications of chemistry and material science in electrochemical technologies. Responsibilities

  • Planning and carrying out experimental work, ensuring that laboratories activities are in keeping within Health & Safety standards and guidelines
  • Analyzing and interpreting experimental datasets
  • Participating in regular meetings to discuss project progress
  • Writing technical reports and presenting to peers
  • Assisting with the laboratory housekeeping Qualifications
  • Studying Bachelors in Materials Chemistry, Electro-chemistry or a related discipline
  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Good fundamental laboratory skills
  • Basic data analysis The recruiting process and the position can be adapted to fit most disabilities, please do not hesitate to mention this when applying.
