About the job

Organization: Welsh Palaeo Survey Group (WPSG) Location: Remote UK-wide Commitment: 2–4 hours per month (Flexible, remote meetings) Role Type: Voluntary / Non-Executive Leadership About Us The Welsh Palaeo Survey Group (WPSG) is a semi professional Heritage and Natural science organization dedicated to the rapid rescue, documentation and preservation of at risk Welsh fossil heritage. Operating along highly volatile, rapidly eroding coastlines like the Bristol Channel, we bridge the gap between academic institutions and field based citizen science. We maintain a strict, professional data recording standard and are currently building a comprehensive, Wales wide palaeontology database. WPSG is currently in an exciting transitional phase. We are actively establishing our foundational Board of Trustees to secure official UK Charity Commission registration and drive our long term vision, including the future development of the Cambrian Museum of Palaeontology. Who do We Partner With? Credibility and structural integration into the Welsh environmental and heritage sectors are at the core of what we do. We are proud to say that we are an official member of the Rhondda Cynon Taf Local Nature Partnership (RCT LNP) and the Vale of Glamorgan Local Nature Partnership (Vale of Glamorgan LNP). As a Trustee, a key part of your strategic focus will be helping us expand this collaborative footprint even wider across Wales. We aim to leverage these established, trusted relationships to get our foot in the door for upcoming Welsh environmental, heritage and construction compliance projects, ensuring citizen science has a seat at the table. What will you do? As a foundational Board Trustee, you will work alongside our executive team to guide WPSG through its next phase of maturity. Depending on your background, you may step into a specific officer role (Chair, Secretary, or Treasurer) or serve as a general Strategic Advisor.

  • Governance & Compliance: Guide the organization through the legal and administrative process of registering as a UK charity.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Help foster and manage our relationships with LNPs, local councils and environmental bodies to expand our project footprint.
  • Strategic Oversight: Shape the long term data management policies, fieldwork safety guidelines and institutional partnership frameworks of the group.
  • Data & Heritage Safeguarding: Help us leverage our professional data recording standards to ensure at risk Welsh palaeontological data is caught, validated and archived safely.
  • Financial & Resource Planning: (For Treasurer focus) Help establish transparent non profit accounting structures, manage future community grants and oversee fundraising strategies.
  • Heritage Management & CRM: Senior field directors, compliance specialists or project managers looking to maintain their industry footprint.
  • Data & GIS Administration: Professionals who can advise on database structures and data verification workflows.
  • Charity Governance & Law: Anyone with experience setting up small charities, writing constitutions or dealing with the Charity Commission.
  • Finance & Accounting: Individuals capable of stepping into a Treasurer capacity to manage micro grants and future funding. Note: In compliance with UK banking and Charity Commission guidelines, candidates applying specifically for the Chair and Treasurer officer positions must be UK residents. What You Will Gain
  • Continuous Professional Credentialing: Evidence of non-profit board-level governance, strategic planning and leadership to keep your portfolio sharp.
  • Networking: High level collaboration with national geological bodies, regional Local Nature Partnerships (LNPs), museums, universities and regional heritage groups.
  • Real World Impact: A foundational legacy in protecting non renewable fossil heritage from coastal erosion and ensuring data integrity isn't lost. If you are ready to help shape the future of Welsh palaeontology and provide vital leadership to a rising scientific non profit, please submit your CV and a brief expression of interest directly through LinkedIn or contact our team on wpsginfo@gmail.com
